The computer animation market has expanded in just five years from a few computer graphics production facilities to over 4000 computer animation production houses, advertising agencies, computer and software companies, and film production companies Computer animation techniques are used to visualize scientific information, create educational material, produce TV commercials, and even produce complete animated movies. Therefore, computer animation is no longer strictly the domain of the computer graphics programmer, but an increasingly useful tool for artists, educators, business persons and scientists - or anyone with access to a personal computer. As with every new technology, a consistent and common terminology has to be developed in order to facilitate widespread use of the existing expert knowledge. It is the goal of Roncarelli's Computer Animation Dictionary to provide a technically solid definition of computer animation terminology, and a standard reference for technical communication in this field.
