Our early childhood church experiences form our filters, which often color our view of God. As well, for better or worse, our relationship with our earthly father provides the bedrock of our perception of God. As we get older, other Christians come along and either positively or negatively affect the way we see God. Into adulthood, church leaders (pastor/church board, elders, deacons) who sometimes act less than God-like, skew how we hoped God would act in certain situations.
In some churches, we hear about God, but we don't experience Him. We often allow church leadership to interpret God's voice for us. Who is He really? And why do we have to learn about him from someone else? What if we went back to the source and instead of being influenced by all the rumors, got it straight from God Himself?
Seeing God, if it can do anything, desires to have you push away all previous perceptions and find out for yourself who God is, what makes him smile, what makes him angry. If we can just sort those things out, we might find our way to drawing closer to God.
As someone once said after I had shared this simple message, "If that is who God is, I could serve a God like that_"
